Ten Years of Me Blog Write Good

Ten years ago today, I created this blog. It’s pretty baffling realizing how much time has gone by. It really feels like a whole other life ago for me for a number of reasons. I had just graduated college, but was in no real rush to leave home, as my mother was seriously ill at the time. That being said, starting a big project to occupy my mind with happier things was definitely an enticing prospect, and thus, Me Blog Write Good was born. The Simpsons had always been a great source of comfort for me through the years, and starting to re-watch the series and chronicle it was more therapeutic than ever, given the circumstances. I was partially inspired to create the blog by the illustrious Dead Homer Society, who was kind enough to plug me early on, which granted me my first handful of readers. I was really surprised anyone was reading this, let along finding it entertaining, but I was appreciative all the same. By the fall, my mother had passed on, and the following year, I started another year of school, but the blog still carried on, as I was determined to complete my mission of chronicling the 444 episodes I set out to do. I finally polished things off in early 2013, just as I had moved to Los Angeles to start a new job in a new career. Just in that year-and-a-half from the blog’s start and initial end point, my life had changed dramatically onto bigger and better things, yet I still felt proud that I had followed through on finishing the blog. Or so I thought.

I briefly resurrected the blog in late 2013 to review the rest of season 21 before my interest waned, letting the blog be for several years. Then, like a moth to the flame, I returned to cover the entire she-bang, reviewing the episodes of the 2010s and continuing up to this day, vowing to cover the entire series until its long overdue end point. Why? I honestly couldn’t tell you. At that point in early 2017, I was recently engaged, starting work in a whole new career and was very busy at the time, and yet I still wanted to devote time out of my day to watch an awful episode of a series I once loved dearly. And while the show may be awful, I still enjoy writing about it. I almost look forward to it, as strange as that may sound. The series is largely unflinching when it comes to any dramatic change, but even though my complaints may be repetitive at times, there’s a degree of comfort in that kind of consistency. And when the show does throw a curve ball of an episode, it’s interesting to examine how they manage to botch it, or how it could have been improved. And despite all of my grumblings and complaints, I’m still genuinely curious where the show is going to go from here, and how it will eventually end. And I guess I will be one of the ever-shrinking few people who can say they’ve watched all 1200 eventual Simpsons episodes, and surely, that’s gotta be worth something, right?

To whoever is reading this, thank you. From the start of the blog, this has become my own weird ritualistic exercise, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t still perk up when I see a new comment notification light up on my phone. I’m still baffled that so many people have read the blog and have said so many kind things about how much they enjoy my reviews. It really helped a lot in the beginning, and I still appreciate it now. I can only hope that you all enjoy the next ten years of the blog as much as the first ten, considering this show will never end. The termination date of this blog remains as much of a mystery as the Simpsons series finale. Keep reading to find out!

See you in September.

  1. Thank you for watching the show so I don’t have to. Like YouTube reviews about other bad shows, this is far more entertaining than the actual episodes.

  2. if it’s any consolation mike, it looks like both you and zombie simpsons have outlived dead homers so uh… *gulp*

  3. Thank you for continuing to do this blog. I never grow tired of hearing your thoughts on each episode as you always have something interesting to say about it. Can’t wait to see your S33 reviews in September. (:

  4. Yes, even when we don’t see eye-to-eye, I enjoy reading it too. Normally I’d question someone who hatewatches something they’re not into, but this kinda gave me a new perspective. And also, kind of inspired me to potentially do something.

I kinda want to write a blog about the Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Brothers Super Show, and Legend of Zelda cartoons. Mostly because I revisited the DKC cartoon during quarantine, and I simultaneously love and hate it for the exact same reasons, and prior to quarantine I’d seen some SMBSS at a friend’s house and felt the exact same way. I kinda want to try a blog for these “So Bad, It’s Good” video game shows.

  5. Big thanks for all you do! You give every episode an honest critique, and I appreciate that immensely. It’s easy to just write off everything after Season 8 as trash, but you take the time to analyze the show and say “here’s what works/doesn’t work and why”. Much appreciated 🙂

And honestly, I understand the allure of wanting to keep watching in spite of all common sense stating that the show can’t possibly ever recover. I keep looking at all those unwatched episodes from Season 17 and onward on Disney+ and thinking “What in God’s name could possibly be waiting for me in there?” It’s like watching a tape of someone’s hernia surgery; you know you’re probably going to regret it, but deep down, aren’t you morbidly curious to know just how bad it could possibly be?

  6. I still get excited every time a new post appears on this blog. Given the size of it now, I would actually consider the blog to be quite an important part of Simpsons history.

  7. You might be one of very few people who has reviewed every episode of this show (so far). I think I speak for everyone here in saying thanks for the ten years of quality critiquing. Go grab yourself a beer, you certainly deserve it.

  8. Your service is invaluable, Mike. A necessary counter-point to the numb, box-checking reviews of other sites. Your passion for and knowledge of the show always shine through. One wishes the shows current writers could find the same quality in their work. Maybe one day, they’ll turn the tide and give the show the send-off it deserves. Part of me still hopes so, even though it’s a minuscule possibility at this point.

Keep fighting the good fight, friend, and enjoy your summer. You’ve earned it.

  9. Your opinions have always been interesting to read, but I get that there’s only so much to say about those select episodes over and over again. But whatever you try out I’ll be sure to give it a go, as I have been following your stuff for ages now (I was pretty shocked when this blog became active again back in 2016, I had read so much and thought it to be dead.

I still think that giving some other Simpsons media (like the Hit and Run game) a go could be interesting, especially the ones that the production staff was involved in (like the Hit and Run game).

    1. It would definitely be interesting to see Mike extend this blog’s scope and cover the more notable works in the Simpsons “Expanded Universe”, as it were. (Which I think just means Bongo Comics, a couple albums, and the video games. Plus the ride, which he’s already covered.)

Besides, Zombie Simpsons is already just spin-off expanded universe type content for the original 8/9 seasons anyway, as far as most of us are concerned, I think.

      1. Ooh, a retrospective on the comics would be good if he’s able to purchase and read the back issues. I have a compilation of the first four Simpsons comics and the first three Bartman comics — including the crossover “When Bongos Collide” with Bartman, The Simpsons, Itchy and Scratchy and Radioactive Man — and while the writing wasn’t quite as good as the show in its prime, there’s a surprising amount of solid jokes in them. I had a lot of fun reading them as a kid.

  10. Thanks for your commitment, Mike! I especially appreciate how you can acknowledge the good moments of the post-classic years — even if that is getting harder to do these days. I can tell you’re at least willing to give every episode a fair shake.

  11. This blog is literally the best Simpsons-related media of the 21st century. Thanks for all you’ve done and will continue to do.

    Also, fuck this show.

  12. This is a great blog. Honestly, it’s just genuinely enjoyable poking fun at Zombie Simpsons. I’m still shocked by the fact that you decided to revive the blog in 2017 but I’m glad you did. See you in late September.

  13. The thought comes to mind, are you ever going back to those Disney and DreamWorks movie reviews? Or is that just…. done with?

  14. Congratulations on ten years. Any project that makes it to a decade is an achievement.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the show keeps going as long as humans exist, to be honest. Even once we reach the point where the voice actors are no longer physically capable of performing for these characters, they’ll just be replaced. The long tortured remains of this show will just keep lumbering along for the rest of our lives, begging for death but never receiving it. That’s what I fear.

  15. I doubt the format of this blog – rewatching every episode of a series and reviewing them – was the absolute first of its kind on the internet, but it’s certainly the first I was aware of, and it was a daily ritual for a while to read and comment. Obviously I fell off commenting around the time I stopped watching the series initially (season 20) but it’s still pretty impressive that you kept up with it this long.

Certainly this blog inspired some copycats – myself included!

  16. Now that you have some spare time this summer, you need to finish up your Disney and DreamWorks blogs.

  17. You did a great job with this blog!

Are you going to talk about the music videos “Do the Bartman” and “Deep Deep Trouble” too? Or any of the shorts? The recent Loki one honestly deserves a big rant if you ask me.

  18. Congrats on 10+ years. Love the blog and revisiting when The Simpsons was my favorite show of all time. It brings back a lot of great memories, and I love seeing other people’s reactions to these episodes.
